Could there be some cleanup in the skype directory? A lot of people obviously haven't yet figured out that when you put your username in the skype box, it includes them in the skype directory. I've seen people with things like "same as messenger," "ask and you might receive," "same as above," and even "fuck off!" in place of a skype name. I think there should be some sort of note about the skype username or something, because almost half the usernames I see on that page are obviously fake skype names that result from someone not bothering to chedk whether the system allows people to call you. The interesting part about this is that I've noticed this after not even two months on the zone, but it's taking people who have been on here for years this long to figure it out. Either way ,could this be given some thought? It would be nice to go through the skype directory and not see a bunch of bogus usernames. Perhaps a news message or just someone manually going through and resetting the skype user list. Also, could there be a way to browse through the list of skype users without actually entering a skype username? That may be the reason for some people's entered skype names, and it seems unnecessary. Maybe the page could have a link at the top before the intro. There are many people who choose not to enter a skype username in their profile but still want to see who else has skype.
I just thought of something else. Since a lot of people still haven't figured out how to enter hobbies, tv shows, movies, etc. properly, could there be an alternative comma separator since that's what people seem to be doing? I know right now it's semicolon, but people dont seem to read the page before entering their interests in, and end up with a broken interest search page.
I get around my profile just fine, its just figuring out what to do, its not rocket science
Yeah, it's not the fault of the site admins if people can't follow simple instructions to put a semicolon between interests. As for the skype thing, I don't use it and don't give a flying fig if people enter weird names in that field.
Hello. As for interests, I chose not to use a comma because there are some movies, TV shows, etc. with commas in their titles. Hope this helps.
I don't think the semicolon thing is a big deal. There are examples, right above the edit boxes, I believe, that show how you are supposed to enter the information. If people actually look at that, they should be fine.
here's my view:
regarding the profiles, people should read before they start typing it in. the information is written for a reason.
i don't see the skype names issue either, just ask so and so what there skype name is. anyway, again it's really up to the member if they want to include there skype name or not
I think the Skype issue is a problem myself. From a user standpoint, and one who actually bothers to periodically glance at the HTML source, all Skype usernames in that table are converted to a link in the form < a href="callto://[username]" > [username] < /a >. I'd actually suggest changing that format to the Skype pseudoprotocol, like this:
< a href="skype:[username]?call" > [username] < /a >
Also, any link that points at a username with spaces is not valid; only the first word of the link will actually be treated as a Skype username because usernames cannot contain spaces (%20 if escaped correctly).
yeah, I really think the comma semicolon thing is not hard to understand, and if you just take a little time to read the instructions, it shouldn't be that hard. As for the Skype thing, if you don't want others to know your Skype name, don't put it up there. It's just common curtesy and common sense to only leave information that you want others to know and use. It's not fair to just put some nonsensical bullshit there but I guess that just reflects the lack of brains and social graces that some people have.
I believe that PHP supports the instantiation of COM (component object model) controls, so if someone wanted to, they could instantiate the Skype API as a COM control and check all Skype names entered to ensure they were valid. Not going to even attempt to write the code here, 1) because I don't know it, and 2) it would probably take up a lot of space.
I don't have any problems with getting around my profile. I also know that those people who put fake skype names don't want you to know their actual skype name. So if they did that, they did it for a reason.
If they don't want you to know, they should not put anything whatsoever in the box (see post 7 for the reason).
precicely. and the semi-collon isn't that hard. it's just like in other sites.
and as for the skype thing, I agree with twcav
